Course overview

Learning to draw is a precious skill that encourages mindfulness and creativity. A quote from the late artist Paula Rego: ‘Sketches always have more vitality than paintings because you're finding things out through doing them.’ Inspired by a range of artists, this course will build your confidence and expertise in willow charcoal and white pastel on mid toned (not white) pastel paper (could be brown parcel paper). Our topic will be still life – in this case Christmas baubles! Learning to see and analyse real objects is the best teacher for developing your own drawing style. Suitable for beginners and those wishing to develop their ̨Íåswag.

Course description

The tutor (a professional exhibiting artist) will discuss a range of artists’ drawing styles in an interactive illustrated visual presentation – both art historical and contemporary examples. Links will be placed in the Canvas modules signposting you to extra information to support your drawing, plus the details of slides discussed during the lesson. The tutor will show a filmed demo to give you an example of how to achieve this (and sometimes what not to do!) The group will then be directed to carry out the task, having been placed in a ‘breakout room’ in which a smaller selection of students congregate in order to be given appropriate advice and direction from the tutor. You get to see how the others are doing, which can be fascinating - everyone will have a different approach. The emphasis will be on building a range of ̨Íåswag: composition, line and tone with these forgiving art media. An eraser will come in handy for this session. Expand your visual vocabulary and learn in a fun and stimulating environment with likeminded people - develop your own drawing style, while celebrating the season!
