History: Shakespeare and Shipwreck

This course will consider in detail three plays which utilise the motif of 鈥榮hipwreck鈥 as a central plot device. The plays are from the middle and later part of Shakespeare鈥檚 career: 鈥楾welfth Night鈥; 鈥楶ericles鈥; and 鈥楾he Tempest鈥 respectively. Each draws on shipwreck as an element drawn from the genre of romance, and incorporates this, in varying degrees from play to play, with elements drawn from comedy. We will explore this generic mix and consider how the tensions between them enrich and complicate the plots, tones and outcomes of each play. We will place each play in its original historical and dramatic context, and consider how each relates to Shakespeare's developing approach to genre. We will look at each work in detail, both on the page and (using clips from DVDs) on the stage, to build up a richer understanding of Shakespeare's experiments with genre at the middle and later periods of his career.

History: American History from Roosevelt to Reagan

During and after WW2 America left the troubled 1930s behind to become one of two Super Powers and a military and economic behemoth. How did this happen? What compromises were made en route? We will examine the period from 1930 to 1980 with particular emphasis on America鈥檚 place in the world. In doing so we will ask to what extent America is an Empire in denial. No previous knowledge is required though the latter decades are ones most of us will have lived through. How do our memories of that period compare with the longer perspective that the passage of time now allows.
